CrewPix FAQ

It must be expensive to run a huge site like CrewPix. How can I help out?

CrewPix runs on a dedicated webserver in a state-of-the-art facility in Texas. It is indeed quite expensive. There are a few simple ways you can help out:

1. Support our Sponsors! Tell them you saw their ads on CrewPix. Don't be shy about clicking on the banner ads you see!

2. You're gonna buy DVD's and stuff anyway right? Why not support CrewPix by clicking one of the links below before you start your shopping. Anything you purchase within 24 hours will give a small percentage back to CrewPix and you will find some great deals!

Who was involved in the creation of this site?

CrewPix was designed and built by Brent J. Craig, a commercial focus puller in Toronto. CrewPix is hosted on advanced web servers from Sightz Productions, they host several cool film sites and handle the traffic and complicated scripts of CrewPix with ease. A special thanks goes out to DOP Dylan Macleod for the loan of his slide scanner and digital camera. CrewPix is a cool site because people like you have uploaded your pictures and comments. Thanks to Jeremy Benning for uploading so many pix!

Why should I upload my pictures?

CrewPix is all about building community. By uploading pictures of you and your crews you add to that community and share your experiences. You also have the opportunity to add a link to YOUR website with every photo you upload. This is a great way to promote your own site and promote yourself!

CrewPix is very well listed in all the search engines. If someone types YOUR name into a search engine, there is a very good chance that your CrewPix photos will come up in the results. It's a great way for people who want to hire you to find your email and website, and to actually see what types of jobs you do.

Besides, you want to see pictures of yourself here, don't you?

What sort of pictures can I upload?

CrewPix is a website for the film production community. Please upload photos that you believe would be of interest to filmmakers and crews. Make sure to check out the legal mumbo jumbo before uploading.

PLEASE be selective. Dumping your entire digicam memory card onto CrewPix is not a great idea, unless somehow every shot is a winner! People don't really want to see 3 identical shots at slightly different exposures, OK?

We monitor the photos on CrewPix very closely and regularly delete:

bulletinnappropriate or off-topic photos,
bulletphotos without captions or with useless ones
bulletphotos with huge logos, watermarks or obvious ads - If you want to advertise on CrewPix, go here.
bulletphotos that we don't believe the uploader owns - press-kit stills, screengrabs from broadcast TV, etc.
bulletmultiple photos of the same thing

I have something to say, something to sell, something to complain about...

Check out the CrewPix Discussion Board. It's an online free-for-all where you can talk about whatever you want. There have been some interesting discussions lately about Film Crew Safety, On-set Recycling, Taxes, etc.
•Got some excess gear to sell? Use the Classified Ads section.
•Looking for production crews? Use the Crews Needed section

I have a product your visitors may like. I want to advertise on CrewPix.

The advertising opportunities on CrewPix.com are among the most flexible and inexpensive on the Internet. CrewPix attracts a steady stream of high-income, time-flexible, ultra-hip visitors. You can purchase ad space online with your credit card!

Advertisers are given access to the CrewPix.com Ad Server where they may maintain their own ad campaign and track their success with detailed statistics.

All CrewPix banner ads can be targeted very specifically - by country, time of day, day of week, IP address, client domain, language, continent, operating system, browser. For example, you could show your ads ONLY to Canadian Macintosh users on Fridays during business hours.

Something is broken on your site, or I have a suggestion/comment/death threat.

Please use our Contact form, found here or call Toll Free 1-877-CREWPIX

Someone uploaded a picture that needs to be removed (inappropriate, violates rules, etc).

We are trying to keep CrewPix free and open to all, consequentially we don't (yet) require a login or password to upload pix. IF you have found something inappropriate, Please call us right away at 1-877-CREWPIX !

There must be some legal Mumbo Jumbo involved in all this!

Don't be disappointed, the lawyers have had their say. You can read it here. Everyone who uploads content agrees to these terms.

Why are many of the pictures of the same people?

Because you haven't uploaded any yet! :-)
Those are the folks I work with all the time so initially these are the photos that were uploaded. If you want to see pix of your crew PLEASE upload as many as you can! It is very easy. If you want to see pictures of YOUR crew, please upload.

(Editors Note - March 2003 - This question doesn't apply so much any more because so many of you have uploaded pix!)

Why are many of the pix from Toronto?

Same reason.

I like porn. Can I upload some here?

You may not upload any offensive, obscene or objectionable pictures here. We monitor the uploads closely and record the IP address of uploaders. Uploaders agree to a legal document prohibiting bad things. We will work with ISP's and law enforcement to shut down anyone who uses CrewPix in an inappropriate way. Don't be the jerk that makes us require people to register before uploading. We are able to track down people who upload inappropriate content. At the very least your Internet provider will cancel your account. At worst, we will press charges.

How can I find specific pictures?

You can search for any words that appear in the captions at the top of the main gallery page, or on this page. Copying the URL of the search results page is a great way to email your mom all of the pictures of you. (She still doesn't really understand what you do for a living, does she?)

You can also put a cool CrewPix search box like this one on YOUR website. Click here for details

Search CrewPix.com

Some of the photo captions have web links. How do I do that?

You can include basic HTML in your captions for things like links. Don't go too crazy because the CrewPix editors examine each new image and caption and will remove inappropriate things.

I messed up on a photo caption. How do I change it?

Unfortunately our photo gallery scripts only allow the CrewPix editors to change captions once they have been uploaded. Please contact us with an exact description of the image (its URL if possible) and caption, and we will make the changes for you.

What size and format should I use for sending in pictures?

Please use JPGs or GIFs. We also support PNG but not all browsers can see them. JPGs are a good choice for photos because they are usually smaller files. We recommend uploads be 800x600 or 1024x768, but feel free to send any size (within reason). Our server will automatically resize really big uploads. We use Photoshop for fixing up our photos. Try to avoid uploading really small pictures. My rule of thumb is "Might someone want to print this picture out for themselves?" If so, go for 800x600 or 1024x768. If it's just a silly or fun picture, make it 640x480.

I want to know how the photos were made.

A cool feature of our site is the ability to decode the information that digital cameras record when they take a shot. Click on the link "Photo Properties" at the top of a picture page to see if this data is available. The data includes camera make and model, lens, f-stop, flash, shutter, date, time, etc. It is only available for pictures taken by digital cameras and is removed by PhotoShop, so not all photos will have the info.

What's with the ads? They annoy me.

We are really sorry, but ads are what make the Internet free for users. We (hopefully) make a small amount of money when you click on the ads and buy things from our sponsors. We have carefully chosen ads that we feel relate closely to the interests of film and video people. Some of the DVD's and books at Amazon are especially cool. If you plan on shopping at Amazon, please consider starting from one of our Links. Anything you add to your shopping cart that day will help keep CrewPix alive.

If you really hate ads, I suggest you look into ad blocking software such as Norton Internet Security or Filterkeys Content Filter.

If it is just one ad that you find particularly annoying or inappropriate, let us know by email or call 1-877-CREWPIX

How did you make this site? What software/hardware/server was used?

The pages and navigation were laid out and coded with Microsoft FrontPage 2002.

It's nothing but Adobe Photoshop for working with images.

The photo gallery is run by Gallery, which is completely FREE and open source. The Discussion groups are done with PHPBB, which is also completely FREE and open source. Our web server guys at Sightz Productions can set your site up with these same features very inexpensively. We strongly believe in the open source software movement, and also use open source solutions for our ad server and surveys.

You need a fast and powerful web server for a site like this, ours is provided by Sightz Productions. Minor changes and updates are made live on the server using the powerful, built-in control panel.

Pictures were scanned with a Hewlett Packard ScanJet Scanner and a Polaroid negative/slide Scanner.
