What's New on CrewPix:

June 3, 2003 - How Well Do You Know CrewPix?  /  Wanna buy some ads?

Submitting Photos
It has come to my attention that many people were not aware that ANYONE and EVERYONE can add their photos to CrewPix. CrewPix is a community - it's not just about my photos - people want to see yours!

We have set it up so online photo submissions are very easy and painless.

You don't have to register or log in and no special software is required - just your web browser. Simply go to the gallery where your photo should be (Commercials, for example) and click the link at the top that says " -••• CLICK HERE to SUBMIT YOUR PHOTOS! •••-". A window will pop up that walks you through the process step-by-step. You will be shocked how easy it is. Anybody can do it.

When you submit a photo, you have the opportunity to include your email address and web site - it's a great way for people to find you and to get your name "out there"! Traffic to my personal website has increased by 4 times since I started posting pix.

Discussion Boards
Many people are also unaware of the rowdy and controversial
CrewPix Discussion Boards. People have been on there lately complaining about everything, asking questions, maybe even planning a coup from what I can tell. The Discussion Boards are also very easy to use. You can post anonymously if you like, or sign up and use a cool nickname and graphic. Registered users can watch topics and be notified by email when they have replies, and send private messages to other members.

Wanna buy some ads?
Finally - we need to sell some ads. As you know, we dumped all of our irrelevant affiliate ads a few weeks back so we could focus on appropriate, industry-related advertising. The folks at
ReelSuite DVD and Rigmarole-Steadicam have been very pleased with the success of their CrewPix ad campaigns.

We have just reduced our advertising rates to make CrewPix Advertising even more attractive. Highly effective text ads can be yours for only 0.7 cents each, graphical banner ads start at 1.0 cents each! Please click here for the CrewPix Advertising Rate Card or email us for the CrewPix Demographic Report

May 20, 2003 - Sorry About the Inappropriate Ads

Hey CrewPixers, I just discovered over the weekend that one of the affiliate advertising programs on CrewPix was showing you guys really stupid ads ("You have won a prize", "Your computer has a virus", etc). I am very sorry, who needs that garbage?!? We carefully screened the ads this affiliate proposed and rejected the useless/misleading ones, then they went and showed them anyway.

I am happy to announce that as of today, CrewPix has dumped all of our affiliate programs. We will be selling CrewPix ad space ONLY to relevant, production industry-related advertisers, and we will screen ALL ads submitted. If there is not an appropriate ad to show, we won't clutter your online experience with any useless ads.

Of course this means that CrewPix now has to rely on YOU FOLKS for financial support. Please consider sponsoring a gallery section or buying some ads for you or your business. CrewPix is a great way to "get your name out there" and support a worthwhile community. Email me here and I will send you the CrewPix Demographics Report and Ad Rates. (Hint: 54% of our visitors make buying decisions for production gear and stock!) We can target ads to specific areas and times and provide detailed ad statistics.

Brent Rants about Income Tax Software
April 13, 2003

One of the great things about owning a website like this is you have a place to rant when something upsets you. Here goes: Quicktax claims to be the most popular income tax software in Canada and the US, but did you know that your tax data can be held for ransom by the makers of Quicktax?!? I recently tried to open a version of Quicktax from a past year, and was told that I had to re-purchase the software if I wanted to see the tax return I filed! No exceptions, no excuses. They even claim to have "deleted" registration info from previous years, and their "tech support" hung up on me! If you ever need access to your accounting and tax data from previous years, and you will,  Quicktax and it's parent company Intuit will screw you over! My advice is to avoid the following products: Quicktax, Quickbooks, and Quicken. Please see this discussion on the CrewPix Discussion Boards for more information and alternatives to this stupidly restrictive software. I am pleased to report that I have replaced all of the Intuit software on my computer with non-evil alternatives and find it faster, more stable, and much better designed.

Oh yeah, the article also has some useful info on figuring out your T4 slips...

Check out our advertising rates here. They are some of the lowest in the industry, and they reach a very targeted group of disposable-income-spendin', gadget-buyin', frequent travellin' hipsters. IS IT OK TO SHOOT?
February 2003

There has been some discussion recently of the issues relating to photography by film crews. It's important to realize that YOU are responsible for the photos you upload here.

Don't give away any secrets like movie plots or ad campaigns; Don't upload embarrassing photos; Don't shoot on sets where you are not permitted; Be very careful with pictures of "stars". Remember we are production crews, not paparazzi. We work on shoots sometimes that are confidential or proprietary, and it is a very competitive business.

We don't want anyone to get in trouble - CrewPix is supposed to be fun. It might be smart to wait until a commercial or movie is released before uploading recognizable photos from the shoot. On set photography may be contrary to the rules of your union. Does this mean you can take shots off the set or of consenting crew members? It's worth checking! Don't forget to read the CrewPix legal mumbo jumbo here.

How can I find photos from film shoots, movie sets and tv shows? Crewpix has lots of photos from film shoots

Where are pictures of film crews? Pictures of Film crews can be found Here

Is there an online photo album for film crews and production crews?

Find pictures from music videos, commercials or tv and movie sets at Crewpix.

It's not spelled crewpics or crewpicks, it's crewpix.

Filmshoot pictures can feature grips, electrics, cameramen, camera people, camera assistants, focus pullers. Also gaffers and directors. Sometimes you can find photos from big Hollywood movies, or little Toronto movies. Feature film production is just like producing indie films, only bigger.

Have you uploaded any photos yet? It is easy to upload your own pictures to CrewPix. Pictues, picures. Use your digital cel phone and upload pictures right from set, if you have a fancy digital PCS phone like the Nokia 7650.

Do you have a digital camera? You should think about buying a digital camera! That's the best way to shoot pictues for Crewpix. I like the Fuji Digital Cameras myself, but we have some excellent pictures here from Canon Digicams as well. Some of the pictures I like best were actually shot using a Sony memorystick in a Sony PD150!. Click on Photo Properties to see the complete shooting info for any of the digital pictures we have here on crewpix. If the shot comes from a digital camera, it will give you the camera brand and model, focal length and f-stop, and all the other camera settings.

We are planning to have a CrewPix photo contest very soon and hope to give away a digital camera as a prize.

You can use the CrewPix chat board / discussion board to have discussions about issues of interest to the film community.

Producers and directors are welcome. Indie films have their own special gallery and you are welcome to upload promotional pictures for your independant films! Crewpix wants to support independant filmmaking and indie film producers. Indie producers often become big-shot Hollywood producers.

CrewPix is the photo album of the production community. It doesn't matter if you are shooting in Hollywood, New York, Toronto or Vancouver - you can send in your pictures from film sets, film crews, production, bad catering, craft service - whatever.

I don't know if you will see photos of big hollywood stars in compromising positions, but you will at least see the dedicated professional film crews who bring them to the big screen.

You may also catch a glimpse of some of the huge rock stars or little indie bands. There's already pictures on Crewpix from music video shoots for The Tragically Hip, Wide Mouth MasonNaughty by Nature, Edwin, Moist, Hayden and others. It's only a matter of time before Madonna and Britney Spears filmcrews are featured! I am curently trying to find my photos from the Marilyn Manson "Beautiful People" music video shoot.
